Wraparound: A Team Approach

Wraparound: A Team Approach

McKenzie* was 16 years old and in alternative school when she started Wraparound with Lookout Mountain Community Services. She was stealing prescription drugs, on probation for violence, and her mom didn’t know what to do with her. Even after several months, she was still hiding some of her bad habits, like hanging out with gang members, from her Wraparound team.

Wraparound is a team approach, and no one does it all alone. The Certified Peer Specialist – Parent (CPSP) was the first to notice that something didn’t seem right at home. McKenzie’s mom needed Wraparound support too, and had been too afraid to leave her abusive husband. Mom learned quickly that McKenzie had a hard time feeling stable – or safe – in a home riddled with so much abuse. Because she was willing to lean on the Wraparound team’s support, she was able to take big, brave steps quickly and move her family to safety. The team helped them put together a crisis prevention safety plan so they’d know steps to take and people to call when they didn’t feel safe.

Seeing her mom begin to thrive again made McKenzie want to take big, brave steps too. It wasn’t easy coming clean, but today she’ll tell you that it was worth it. She found a counselor she loves, learned to set goals, and started using her talents to achieve them. She’s off probation now, back in a traditional school setting and making good grades. Mom and McKenzie talk their problems out now instead of hiding them. The wraparound team believes McKenzie and her mom had what it took to succeed, and just needed a little support.
